Unemployment in Orange County rocketed to a record 8.5% in March from a revised 8.0% in February as local employers continued to dump jobs, state Employment Development Department officials reported today.
From March 2008 to last month, 71,900 local payroll positions disappeared, a March 4.8% annual pace for job losses. Orange County now has just under 1.43 million workers on local payrolls, wiping out all the job gains in the last five years. Nearly 140,000 are now unemployed.
“The extent and speed of the job losses are unprecedented,” said Esmael Adibi, an economist at Chapman University. “I think the CEOs are panicking.”
